As the father of a kindergarten student, I can’t help but reminisce about my kindergarten days. They were half days of school that focused on socialization skills, the correct way to hold a pair of scissors, how to color inside the lines and making sure I knew my ABCs and 123s. While my rose colored glasses need to be replaced with bifocals, I am continually amazed how life and education continue to change.
Kindergarten through 5th grade teachers met on Wednesday to continue working on transitioning from the Missouri Grade Level Expectations to the Common Core State Standards. Teachers met with our state professional development representative to break down these educational standards at each grade level. It was a busy day of learning and growing for our teachers as we transition to these standards over the next 2 years. These standards change instructional expectations and “rigor” to help make all students college and career ready. From increased reading levels to more complex math concepts at each grade leve, you will notice changes in what our students are learning. We are ready to take on this new adventure and, with your partnership, we know our students will be successful through this transition and into the future. Our district will provide more information as we work through this process.
